Did you know that children are highly influenced by the actions and behaviors of adults? Research indicates that children observe and imitate those they admire, especially parents and guardians. This blog post will explore the importance of being a healthy role model for your children and how an active lifestyle can significantly benefit their development. From my personal experience completing the MURPH workout with my son, I learned firsthand how impactful our actions can be. Keep reading to discover insights on how you can inspire your children to adopt healthier habits and what this means for their future.
The Power of Observation in Childhood Development
It’s a well-known fact that children learn through observation. From the moment they are born, kids watch their parents, siblings, and caregivers, absorbing information like sponges. This process is known as modeng behavior. According to social learning theory, developed by psychologist Albert Bandura, children model the behaviors, attitudes, and emotional reactions of others, especially adults. Therefore, if you are leading an active and healthy lifestyle, your children are likely to follow suit.
Why Healthy Role Models Matter
When you, as a parent or guardian, demonstrate healthy habits, you instill the values of physical fitness and well-being into your kids. An active role model will not only encourage physical activity but also foster a positive attitude towards health, fitness, and overall well-being. Studies show that children are more likely to grow into adults who value health when they are raised in households where exercise and a balanced diet are prioritized.
Regular exercise has countless benefits for children. It helps to maintain a healthy weight, improves cardiovascular health, strengthens the muscles and bones, and promotes healthy growth and development. When children see you engaging in physical activities, they recognize exercise as a normal part of life, making them more likely to adopt similar patterns.
Exercise is also vital for mental well-being. Physical activity releases endorphins, the body's natural mood lifters, which reduces feelings of stress and anxiety. By showcasing a balanced lifestyle, you can help your children understand the importance of mental health resources and self-care.
Getting fit together can also foster social skills. Whether it’s hitting the local park or participating in fitness classes, engagement in such activities encourages teamwork, cooperation, and communication. These skills are essential for success in many facets of life, including school and careers.
My Personal Journey with My Son
I want to share an experience that brought this concept to life for me. This past Memorial Day, I completed the MURPH workout at the park, to honor those who served in our armed forces. This workout involves running a mile, performing 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, and 300 air squats, followed by another mile run. With my son in the stroller, we set out on our journey.
While I pushed him along the path and completed my sets, I noticed him watching everything I was doing and all the people around us. After completing the workout (in under 40 minutes by the way), my son began to mimic my movements. Soon enough, he was doing air squats right alongside me, you can see this clip on my Instagram!
This was a spontaneous moment, but it reinforced a vital lesson: our children are watching us. It's our responsibility to let them see us engaging in healthy activities rather than succumbing to the easy temptation of sitting on our phones all day and eating like crap. That day, I realized how important it is to be a role model, not just to preach the benefits of exercise.
Creating a Healthy Home Environment
To make your home and family healthier, here are some actionable strategies:
- Incorporate Family Activities: Plan family outings centered around physical activities, such as hiking, walking, biking, or playing sports. Ensure that these activities remain enjoyable for everyone involved. One of my families favorite things to do, is just take off on a nice walk. Me and the wife get to chat, the dog gets to run aorund, and our son gets to explore the world.
- Eat Together: Prepare and enjoy home-cooked meals with your family. Engage your children in the cooking process. Teach them about nutrition and the importance of fueling their bodies with wholesome food. I can't cook very well, but my wife can whip up some delicious tasting healthy recipes.
- Limit Screen Time: Set boundaries for time spent on devices for entertainment. Encourage alternative activities that promote health and wellness. This can be anything: reading, playing a game inside (kids will play some crazy games), and even something as simple as getting out the house and walking around a cool store or shoppng center... me and my son's personal favorite, Bass Pro Shop .
- Cultivate a Can Do Attitude: Approach challenges with a proactive mindset. Speak positively about health and fitness in front of your children and friends and remind them that mistakes and setbacks are opportunities for growth. My son is not formally speaking yet, but when he can, the words "I can't" will not be allowed in my house. You CAN do anything, you might just have to work really hard and fail a bunch of times.
Overcoming Challenges
While the idea of being an active, healthy role model might seem overwhelming because you are so busy, but remember that it’s about progress, not perfection. Here are tips for overcoming common challenges:
- Making (not finding) Time: Busy schedules make it difficult to fit in exercise, but it’s essential to prioritize your health. Plan workouts into your daily routine and involve your children. Remember that even short bursts of activity can be beneficial. If you try to find time you will never find it, you are a busy person, you have to make time. This may mean waking up earlier, eating lunch faster, or staying up later.
- Dealing with Resistance: Sometimes it is hard, I will not lie to you. You will have days where you won't want to make the right choices, that is okay. Again this is a journey. The key to overcoming resistance is consisity. Eventually it will become something you just do, no matter how you feel, but that is a mental muscle you have to build by continueing to show up even on the days you don;t want to. Noone is perfect, everyone misses days, everyone eats terrible at some point... give yourself some grace and get back on track.
- Setting Realistic Expectations: Understand that leading by example is a gradual process. Allow yourself to make mistakes and engage in open conversations about health and why it matters. Acknowledge the effort, no matter how small, and celebrate successes.
- Create Challenge Games: Turn workouts into fun games. Set challenges, have friendly competitions, and reward hard work with small prizes. This way, fitness becomes a fun activity instead of a chore. P.S. this makes it more fun for you too! Exercise should be enjoyable, so find a style you enjoy and do that. The best program is the one that you will stick too!
So Now What?
In summary, leading by example is a powerful way to instill lifelong healthy habits in your children. They are remarkable observers, and your actions leave a lasting impression on their development. Showing them the value of health and fitness goes beyond words; it sets the foundation for their futures. Let them see you making choices that lead to better health and inspire them to do the same.
